Vision Sunday 2023

Welcome!

Vision Sunday is an opportunity to bring a point of focus for the year while restating what we believe and what we value.  If you've never been to a Vision Sunday before, these are unique, significant days for us, and we would love to have you join us on Sunday, 5 March at KMC.

As part of Vision Sunday, we looked at three areas: GO, SOW and GROW. As a reminder of Vision Sunday, we were each given a seed to sow.

SUNFLOWER SEEDS

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to plant your sunflower seed:

  1. Choose the Right Location

Sunflowers need full sun to grow well, so select an area that gets at least six hours of sunlight daily. They also prefer well-draining soil, so ensure your chosen area doesn’t hold water after rain.

  2. Prepare the Soil

Loosen the soil in the planting area to a depth of about 8 inches. Add compost or other organic matter to the soil to help improve its quality and fertility. Sunflowers need plenty of nutrients to grow tall and strong, so ensure you provide the soil with the nutrients it needs.

  3. Plant the Seeds

Place the seeds about 1 inch deep in the soil, spacing them about 2 feet apart. Cover the seeds with soil and gently tap them down to secure them in place. Water the seeds immediately after planting to help them settle into the soil.

  4. Water and Fertilize Regularly

Sunflowers need regular water to grow, especially during dry spells. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged until the seeds germinate and the plants are established. Once the plants are a few inches tall, you can reduce the watering frequency. You can also add a slow-release fertilizer to the soil to give the plants additional nutrients as they grow.

  5. Provide Support

Sunflowers can grow very tall, so providing them with some support is a good idea. This can be as simple as using a stake or a tomato cage to keep the plants upright. Alternatively, you can plant the seeds next to a wall or fence that the plants can use for support as they grow.

  6. Enjoy the Flowers

Sunflowers usually bloom within 70 to 90 days from the time you plant the seeds. Once they bloom, they will continue to produce flowers for several weeks. Enjoy the beauty and fragrance of the sunflowers, and watch as they attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to your garden.

Follow these easy steps and have fun planting your Sunflower Seeds!
